Rolled Ice Cream Event Hire FAQs
Rolled ice cream is made by pouring a liquid ice cream base onto a freezing metal plate. Fresh ingredients like fruits or cookies are chopped and mixed into the base, which is spread thinly across the cold surface.
Once it solidifies, the ice cream is scraped into rolls using a spatula and placed upright in a cup. The rolls are then topped with your choice of fruits, sauces, or sprinkles, creating a customisable and visually appealing dessert. The entire process is done quickly, ensuring a fresh, dense dessert with a rich flavour.

What is Rolled Ice Cream?
Rolled ice cream, also known as stir-fried ice cream, is a fresh, made-to-order frozen dessert that started life on the street stalls of Thailand. Instead of being scooped from a tub, every portion is created in front of you on a freezing cold pan, mixed with your chosen ingredients, and scraped into delicate spirals. The result is a dessert that is as fun to watch being made as it is to eat.
How rolled ice cream is made
The whole process happens on a chilled metal plate, usually cooled to around -20°C. Here is how a portion comes together:
- A creamy liquid base is poured onto the cold surface.
- Fresh ingredients such as fruit, cookies, or chocolate are added on top.
- Everything is chopped and blended into the base as it begins to freeze.
- The mixture is spread into a thin, even layer across the pan.
- Once set, it is scraped up with a spatula so it curls into neat rolls.
- The rolls are stood upright in a cup and finished with toppings of your choice.
Because it is prepared to order, no two servings have to be the same. You can customise the base, the mix-ins, and the toppings, from fresh berries to chocolate drizzle, so every cup is personal.
How is it different from regular ice cream?
Traditional ice cream is churned, which whips air into the mixture and gives it a soft, light texture. Rolled ice cream is frozen flat with almost no added air. That gives it a denser, creamier bite and a more concentrated flavour, so the fruit, chocolate, or biscuit you choose really comes through.
Why people love it
Rolled ice cream is a genuine talking point. Watching a liquid base turn into neat rolls in a couple of minutes is part of the appeal, which is why it is such a hit at parties and events, and such a popular thing to film and share. It is fresh, customisable, and hard to look away from.

Rolled ice cream, also known as stir-fried ice cream, is a unique frozen dessert. Originating in Thailand, this innovative treat takes a new approach to making ice cream by transforming a liquid base into delicate, rolled spirals.
The process starts by pouring a creamy base onto an extremely cold metal surface, often chilled to around -20°C. From there, ingredients like fresh fruit, cookies, or chocolate are added, chopped, and blended into the mixture.
The ice cream is then spread thinly across the surface, creating a smooth layer before it’s scraped into thin, roll-shaped curls using spatulas.
These ice cream rolls arranged upright in a cup, and topped with everything from fresh berries to chocolate drizzle, making each serving a personalised experience.
Unlike traditional scooped ice cream, the rolled version has a denser texture and richer flavor due to the absence of added air.
